The National Center for Arts Research released the Arts Vibrancy Index Report for 2022 last December, highlighting the resiliency of arts and culture organizations within communities across the United States. The Arts Vibrancy Index takes into account the level of supply, demand, and government support of the arts within communities throughout the U.S. and is intended to assist citizens, policymakers, and artists understand how the arts and cultural sectors contribute to a community’s life and how to cultivate arts vibrancy within their communities.

FOUR COMMUNITIES IN MASSACHUSETTS MADE THE LIST!

  • Boston and Cambridge/Newton/Framingham (as classified by the Index) were included in the Top 20 Most Arts-Vibrant list in the large communities category. In other words, we have two of the largest arts-vibrant communities in the country here in Massachusetts.

  • Pittsfield made the list of Top Medium-Sized Communities.

  • Vineyard Haven made the Top Small-Sized Communities list.

Overall, findings from the study show how Arts Vibrancy is ever-evolving, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Programming shifted towards outdoor and virtual offerings for events put together by arts and culture organizations to encourage participation.

In this report, we reflect on arts vibrancy from a place of gratitude and express our solidarity with communities as they continue to meet the moment with awe-inspiring resilience.
